Whip It

A Screening of Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut
Whip it, 2009

Drew Barrymore’s debut film as a director, ‘Whip It,’ is based on the novel ‘Derby Girl.’ Bliss (Ellen Page) is a bored girl living in a small town in Texas. She rebels against everything around her, especially her father – a football champion and a well-known coach, and her mother – a regular beauty pageant contestant. Bliss decides she needs a change. One day, she comes across a flyer inviting people to roller derby tryouts. She attends, gets accepted, and becomes part of the team. From that moment on, Bliss’s life changes. The result is a heartwarming indie-sports film full of humor and high female energy (USA 2009 / 111 minutes / English with Hebrew subtitles).
